Choosing a Pet Sitter

It can be difficult to choose the right pet care provider. This decision is made more challenging by the increasing number of "hobby sitters" -- people who are NOT professional animal care providers, but do it "on the side" for extra money.

You wouldn't leave your children with an unqualified, unproven stranger. Why would you do that with your pets?

Here are the standards by which you should evaluate potential Pet Care providers. Any service that cannot meet these standards should be treated with caution -- they may be "hobby sitters", not qualified, trusted professionals.

• Is 100% dedicated to the care of your pets, not treating them as a “side business”.
• Answers client inquiries and complaints promptly and with courtesy.
• Has insurance to protect your pets and your personal belongings from damage, loss or theft.
• Visits your home to meet your pets and get detailed information on their care before accepting the assignment.
• Asks questions to clarify your needs and the needs of your pets.
• Clearly explains all fees and services, providing written literature as needed.
• Shows a positive attitude during the initial meeting and seems comfortable and competent in dealing with animals.
• Can provide written references from veterinarians and satisfied clients. 
• Has a contingency plan for pet care in case of inclement weather or personal illness.
• Has access to an emergency vet 24 hours a day.
• Has experience in caring for pets and is clearly mindful of their safety and well-being.
• Leaves a written record of each visit to keep the client informed.
• Calls to confirm or has the client call to confirm that the client has returned home; otherwise continues to care for the pets until client returns.
• Takes care to protect the client’s confidentiality and the security of the client’s home.
• Conducts business with honesty and integrity, and observes all federal, state and local laws pertaining to business operations and animal care.

It's never easy to leave your pets in someone else's hands, but following these guidelines will give you the peace of mind of knowing that you made the right choice of Pet Care providers.

2. Is this person qualified to evaluate my pet's health and recognize a dangerous change, should one occur?

3. Does this person know the 24-hour emergency vets available in my area, and have reliable transportation to get my pets there if needed, anytime night or day?

4. Does this person have the experience to know how to handle an emergency with my pets or my home? If something happens, are they insured to cover the damages to my home, my pets, and my belongings?
